I have many passions, one of them watching movies over and over and over until I can quote it word for word. The 1980s was one of the best decades for many reasons. Synchronization entered music, Madonna became mainstream, and cheesy 80s Flicks became a phenomenon. OH, and I was born in 1986!!! haha There are seriously SO many flicks that I had to choose from, but I managed to narrow it down to my Top 13 Best Movies of 1980…in no particular order. I love movies, therefore I cannot assign them to specific “favorite” slots. Instead, I give you just the Top 13 movies I loved in no specific order. I love them all the same, so even though it’s a countdown, they are all equally loved in my heart (*que cheesy music*).
Top 13 BEST Movies of the 1980s
1. The Goonies (1985)
The description IMDb gives is “In order to save their home from foreclosure, a group of misfits set out to find a pirate’s ancient treasure.” This movie is SO much more than that. The music, Chunk, and “Hey you guuuuuuys” will forever be cherished in my favorite movie catalog. I have never been able to say Baby Ruth properly, and I have attempted numerous times to perfect the truffle shuffle (let’s not even go there haha).
2. Annie (1982)
The description IMDb gives is “A young orphan girl’s adventures in finding a family that will take her.” Pfft, that description doesn’t do this movie justice. From Daddy Warbucks, to Tomorrow, Tomorrow, this movie is amazing. THIS Annie is amazing. Any other movie (including the shitty remake with the black girl) is just stupid and unappealing!
3. The Shining (1980)
Holy, shitballs! This is a classic scary movie based on Stephen King’s novel, The Shining. The description IMDb gives is “A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil and spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from the past and of the future.” Can anyone say, REDRUM?! And those creepy twins girls? Yeeeeeeeeah, no! haha
4. The Princess Bride (1987)
Inconceivable! The description IMDb gives is “A classic fairytale, with swordplay, giants, an evil prince, a beautiful princess, and yes, some kissing (as read by a kindly grandfather).” This is a fun, hilarious, romantic story!!!
5. Dirty Dancing (1987)
Nobody puts Baby in the corner! The description IMDb gives is “Spending the summer in a holiday camp with her family, Frances “Baby” Houseman falls in love with the camp’s dance instructor Johnny Castle.” Patrick Swayze is swoon-worthy, the music is hoppin’, and the dancing? I know we’ve all tried it haha!!
6. Christmas Vacation (1989)
I know this is a Christmas movie, but it’s HILARIOUS!! Of course, the entire National Lampoon series is funny, but this tops it! The description IMDb gives is “The Griswold family’s plans for a big family Christmas predictably turn into a big disaster.” Seriously, one of the best movies ever. Enough said.
7. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
Romance, humor, and a great soundtrack! The description IMDb gives is “A high school wise guy is determined to have a day off from school, despite what the principal thinks of that.”
8. The Breakfast Club (1985)
Cult classic, duh! The description IMDb gives is “Five high school students, all different stereotypes, meet in detention, where they pour their hearts out to each other, and discover how they have a lot more in common than they thought.” Funny, cute, romantic, and GREAT music!!
9. Beetlejuice (1988)
The description IMDb gives is “A couple of recently deceased ghosts contract the services of a “bio-exorcist” in order to remove the obnoxious new owners of their house.” Shake, Shake, Shake, Senora!!!
10. The Lost Boys (1987)
Vampires & hot boys, oh my!! The description IMDb gives is “After moving to a new town, two brothers are convinced that the area is frequented by vampires.”
11. Ghostbusters (1984)
To tell you the truth, I had no idea this movie was this old! The description IMDb gives is “Three unemployed parapsychology professors set up shop as a unique ghost removal service.” Funny and twisted!
12. E.T.-The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
E.T., phone home! The description IMDb gives is “A troubled child summons the courage to help a friendly alien escape Earth and return to his home-world.” Little Drew Barrymore is adorable, and so is E.T.!!
13. Empire of the Sun (1987)
This is nothing like the other movies on here, but it is such a great film I couldn’t leave it out. Even as a young boy, Christian Bale stole my heart. The description IMDb gives is “A young English boy struggle to survives under Japanese occupation during World War II.” Sad, compelling, and a GREAT storyline!
And there you have it. My Top 13 BEST Movies of the 1980s…in no particular order! I know I am missing a lot of good classics, like the Star Wars franchise (2 came out in the early 80s), Batman (with Michael Keaton), and all the romantic comedies, but I’ll find a way to include those in countdowns in the future!
