Top 13 BEST Movies of the 1980s…In No Particular Order!

I have many passions, one of them watching movies over and over and over until I can quote it word for word. The 1980s was one of the best decades for many reasons. Synchronization entered music, Madonna became mainstream, and cheesy 80s Flicks became a phenomenon. OH, and I was born in 1986!!! haha There are seriously SO many flicks that I had to choose from, but I managed to narrow it down to my Top 13 Best Movies of 1980…in no particular order. I love movies, therefore I cannot assign them to specific “favorite” slots. Instead, I give you just the Top 13 movies I loved in no specific order. I love them all the same, so even though it’s a countdown, they are all equally loved in my heart (*que cheesy music*).

Top 13 BEST Movies of the 1980s

1. The Goonies (1985)

The Goonies

The description IMDb gives is “In order to save their home from foreclosure, a group of misfits set out to find a pirate’s ancient treasure.” This movie is SO much more than that. The music, Chunk, and “Hey you guuuuuuys” will forever be cherished in my favorite movie catalog. I have never been able to say Baby Ruth properly, and I have attempted numerous times to perfect the truffle shuffle (let’s not even go there haha).

2. Annie (1982)

The description IMDb gives is “A young orphan girl’s adventures in finding a family that will take her.” Pfft, that description doesn’t do this movie justice. From Daddy Warbucks, to Tomorrow, Tomorrow, this movie is amazing. THIS Annie is amazing. Any other movie (including the shitty remake with the black girl) is just stupid and unappealing!

3. The Shining (1980)

The Shining

Holy, shitballs! This is a classic scary movie based on Stephen King’s novel, The Shining. The description IMDb gives is “A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil and spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from the past and of the future.” Can anyone say, REDRUM?!  And those creepy twins girls? Yeeeeeeeeah, no! haha

4. The Princess Bride (1987)

The Princess Bride

Inconceivable! The description IMDb gives is “A classic fairytale, with swordplay, giants, an evil prince, a beautiful princess, and yes, some kissing (as read by a kindly grandfather).” This is a fun, hilarious, romantic story!!!

5. Dirty Dancing (1987)

Dirty Dancing

Nobody puts Baby in the corner! The description IMDb gives is “Spending the summer in a holiday camp with her family, Frances “Baby” Houseman falls in love with the camp’s dance instructor Johnny Castle.” Patrick Swayze is swoon-worthy, the music is hoppin’, and the dancing? I know we’ve all tried it haha!!

6. Christmas Vacation (1989)

Christmas Vacation

I know this is a Christmas movie, but it’s HILARIOUS!! Of course, the entire National Lampoon series is funny, but this tops it! The description IMDb gives is “The Griswold family’s plans for a big family Christmas predictably turn into a big disaster.” Seriously, one of the best movies ever. Enough said.

7. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

Ferris Buellers's Day Off

Romance, humor, and a great soundtrack! The description IMDb gives is “A high school wise guy is determined to have a day off from school, despite what the principal thinks of that.”

8. The Breakfast Club (1985)

The Breakfast Club

Cult classic, duh! The description IMDb gives is “Five high school students, all different stereotypes, meet in detention, where they pour their hearts out to each other, and discover how they have a lot more in common than they thought.” Funny, cute, romantic, and GREAT music!!

9. Beetlejuice (1988)

The description IMDb gives is “A couple of recently deceased ghosts contract the services of a “bio-exorcist” in order to remove the obnoxious new owners of their house.” Shake, Shake, Shake, Senora!!!

10. The Lost Boys (1987)

The Lost Boys

Vampires & hot boys, oh my!! The description IMDb gives is “After moving to a new town, two brothers are convinced that the area is frequented by vampires.”

11. Ghostbusters (1984)

To tell you the truth, I had no idea this movie was this old! The description IMDb gives is “Three unemployed parapsychology professors set up shop as a unique ghost removal service.” Funny and twisted!

12. E.T.-The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

E.T., phone home! The description IMDb gives is “A troubled child summons the courage to help a friendly alien escape Earth and return to his home-world.” Little Drew Barrymore is adorable, and so is E.T.!!

13. Empire of the Sun (1987)

Empire of the Sun

This is nothing like the other movies on here, but it is such a great film I couldn’t leave it out. Even as a young boy, Christian Bale stole my heart. The description IMDb gives is “A young English boy struggle to survives under Japanese occupation during World War II.” Sad, compelling, and a GREAT storyline!

And there you have it. My Top 13 BEST Movies of the 1980s…in no particular order! I know I am missing a lot of good classics, like the Star Wars franchise (2 came out in the early 80s), Batman (with Michael Keaton), and all the romantic comedies, but I’ll find a way to include those in countdowns in the future! All images and information was obtained from IMDb.

Kids, and Reading, and Crocheting…Oh My!

Well, this week definitely wasn’t the best week to start topic days…I have been SO busy with 6 kids, 2 dogs, a husband, and WARM weather. We were outside all day, ON TOP of me reading a new book series by Jennifer Armentrout (if you haven’t heard of her, look her up! Romance and action!!!), and crocheting up a storm. I have been bored for months, but thanks to my husband’s awesome raise, I have been able to perform more hobbies.

I am now blogging, reading a new series, crocheting (I have 3 planned afghans I need to complete), and trying out a ton of new recipes. I am SO THANKFUL I get to stay home and do this, but I cannot wait for the day when I get my Ph.D. and actually become a counselor. Even though I am a SAHM (Stay At Home Mom), I am super busy!!! Don’t get me wrong, I love every second, but I really wish I could have started this week off a little better. I am so thankful for those of you that take the time to read my posts. I ramble on A LOT, but it’s nice to get my opinions, thoughts, ideas, and experiences out in the open.

Stay tuned for my Top 13 Movies of the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s tomorrow! This should be FUN!!!!

Mental Monday ~ Day 1

Today’s the day! The day I start my very first organized topic week!! I am a psychology major, so anything that deals with the mind interests me. Some of my blogs will be about mental disease, issues, and new age treatment. My life topics will cover love, relationships, and kids.

I guess I called it “Mental” Monday because Manic/Maniac Mondays just didn’t sound right to me. Being mental is what it’s all about. Intelligence, anxiety, self-image, and feelings all tie in with your mind. Sometimes I feel like I love my husband and children so much that no one in this world could love someone else like I love my family. I feel so strongly, that writing this blog is helping me focus. This is key to my Mental Mondays…

What a wonderful way to describe life. You must live life forward, but the only way to understand it is to look at it backwards…in the past. I’m sure every one of you have made mistakes you wish you could take back. Whether it was something big or something little, everyone has made a mistake. The key to life, however, is learning from those mistakes. Touch a hot stove once and burn your finger, you won’t touch it again (at least adults won’t…it takes a few times for little kids…and I’ve touched it not thinking, but you get the drift!).

Life is eternity. It is yesterday, today, and tomorrow. It is 100 years ago and 100 years from now. It is giving birth to another human being, saying “I do” to the love of your life, and navigating the daily droll of work, peer pressure, and societal expectations.

It is not our destiny to understand life. It is our destiny to live it.

For years I focused on finding the meaning of life and the “pursuit of happiness.” I wasted hours, days, years on trying to perfect my life…instead of living every moment to the fullest. When my son was born in 2012, it seemed like my world exploded. I began to feel every emotion, see every color, and hear every sound. I thought I felt before, but nothing prepared me for what followed his birth. I love my Princess, but my Prince altered my state of mind. I had my daughter when I was 19. A child. Of course I did not realize that then, but 8 years later I’ve gained some much needed wisdom.

So what is the key to a happy life? Well, that’s a little harder to explain. It is different for every person. One individual may want to accomplish great things in science, while another wants a large family. AND, life is never set in stone. I swore on my existence I would not live forever in South Carolina. When my husband joined the military, I was SO excited to leave the state.  I’ve seen Europe and the whole eastern coast, so I was dead set on settling somewhere new. Then when my husband left the military, we moved back to SC and we settled in the country, a place we used to hate. Now, for the first time in our lives, we feel at home. We are renting now but we plan on buying some land in a couple of years. 10 years ago I would have laughed in your face if I would have thought I would actually like staying in South Carolina. But now I cannot picture us anywhere else. It sure does feel awesome knowing where we belong.

Everything in life changes. Your job may change, your relationship, your financial statues, your passions. Make the best of what you have when you have it, and learn to go with the flow.

The point of this long drawn out post is that life is full of surprises, accomplishments, failures, and mistakes. If you want a happy life, you have to learn to compartmentalize all that happens to you so you can learn from your past, to improve your future. It really is that simple.

Good Morning from SC, USA!!

Let the sun shine on you today!
Let the sun shine on you today!

I woke up to a cold, brittle day in good ole southern USA. South Carolina is know for it’s hot and humid summers and mild winters. Well, this winter has been anything BUT mild. We’ve been averaging near freezing temperatures every day, which is SO NOT COOL (well, it’s technically cold as shittake but whatever! haha). This is so unlike our normal weather. I’m a warm weather gal, so the only thing that warms me up nowadays are the smiles from my husband and children, the bright sun shining down on me, and a good cup of joe, or as my son calls it, “caw-kee.”

Getting Organized

So now that I am finally learning how to navigate the blogging world pretty smoothly, I have decided to start organizing certain posts on certain days. I have seen people with multiple blogs: like one for food, one for fashion, and one for opinions and just writing. Whew!!! I don’t know how they can handle multiple blogs when handling one takes up so much time! So to organize this craziness in my head I will be assigning days. Below you will see what I have come up with so far.

  • Mental Mondays ~ Mondays I will be writing posts pertaining to life, psychology, and opinions.
  • Top 13 Tuesdays ~ Books, movies, quotes, anything really that can be put into a countdown-type list. I picked “13” because it’s my lucky and favorite number!
  • Wacky Wednesdays ~ Pictures, videos, jokes, and anything else…humor!
  • Terrific Thursdays~ All about inspiration and self-help.
  • Food Fridays ~ Recipes Galore! I have been on a cooking spree for a few weeks now. I am cooking so many new dishes that I feel like that is the main direction this blog is going. While I’ve always wanted to blog about recipes, I want this blog to be more, so I will limit my recipes to only one day a week (although I can’t promise I won’t post multiple recipes on Fridays lol).

There we go. It’s a work in progress, like this blog, so this is not set in stone. I am really enjoying writing my thoughts, ideas, and creations. This also gives me some flexibility to write what I want to write, when I want to. I can just schedule it for a future posting date. Took me a few days to figure that one out, but now that I have, I have been writing up a storm.

My heart feels lighter, my head is clearer, and life seems to be falling into place. I don’t know if it’s the blog specifically, but having a reason to actually write for others instead of just myself has gotten my creative neurons firing. I am excited to see where this blog will go!

What a Difference 5 Years Makes…

I just have to throw this out there. It AMAZES me how different 5 years in the technology field means in the real world.

Back in 2009, my husband and I purchased our first flatscreen Toshiba 40″ LCD television. It was top of the line and we paid around $1200 USD after taxes. At the time, that was one of the mid-high level televisions. Well, this past year we upgraded to a Sharp 60″ Aquos television WITH a 2-year warranty (we have a busy bee 2 year old so it was necessary!) and we only paid $850 USD after taxes. WHAT?!?! That in itself just blows me away!!!!! From a 40″ to a 60″ and we paid $350 USD LESS!!

Today, my husband and I both purchased the same budget-friendly laptop from Toshiba. It’s a “cheaper” laptop, but it has a good processor, 4GB RAM, and a 500GB hard drive. We have so many other electronics so these laptops are really just our “toys.” Well, back in 2008 I bought a “cheap” laptop for school and it cost us $1000 USD after taxes. Guess how much we paid for TWO laptops? Our grand total was $535.98…for TWO laptops. That is just insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to mention the speed of processors, the increase in RAM, and hard drive space. I just can’t believe you can get a laptop with 1TB and more on it. Windows 8 is pretty nifty with apps instead of having to go on a browser to reach certain pages. I currently have Facebook, WordPress (obviously), Yahoo! Mail, Twitter, and Pandora running on the laptop. I can easily switch between applications. I NEVER would have thought you could do all of this so flawlessly on a laptop (in case you forgot, my first and only laptop I’ve owned was bought back in 2008 and it was S.L.O.W.).

I remember the very first phone I got for Christmas when I was 16 (back in 2002). It was one of those ugly Nokia phones that had Snakes as the only game. Now, I have a tablet, smartphone, laptop, desktop, video game consoles, 3DS (for my daughter), and all kinds of kitchen gadgets.

On a final note, technology, simply, RULES. lol 😉

When Dreams and Realities Clash

Oh how true these words are for me.

For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to be an Astronomer…well, actually an Astrophysicist, but whatevs! I had a full scholarship to Northern Arizona University and I had goals. But I had such a strenuous schedule my senior year of high school and I worked 25 hours a week on top of school so I was fed up. I decided to join the military.

Well, two months before I graduated I became friends with a baaaaaaad group of people. I started dating a guy and that relationship became toxic. I dodged joining the military and sunk into a depression. After 18 months of pure HELL, I escaped that life and found myself waitressing at a diner. One day this hot dude walked in the door and I knew I had just met my forever. We were 19 and completely smitten. Two weeks later we professed our love, and one month later we found out I was pregnant with our daughter.

My dreams and goals ended right there. Now, before you judge me hear me out. I had extremely high expectations and goals for myself. At 19 I was working 80 hour weeks (2 shifts daily) just because I had the stamina and I wanted the money. The day I found out I was pregnant, everything changed. My unborn child became the center of my universe.

For years I focused on raising my daughter and taking care of my husband (we married 6 months after we hooked up). I quit dreaming, quit reaching for goals, and I put all others above myself. I did this for SIX years. Then one day I ….. Woke up? Had an epiphany? Said, “What the hell am I doing?”

I mean seriously, what kind of example was I setting for my daughter? So instead of dreading my failed dreams and goals, I set NEW ones.

When your dreams and realities clash, make new ones! Life is ever changing. You are never destined for one path. Life is made up of hundreds, thousands, millions of paths and options for each individual to choose from.

So what did I do? I went to college, online of course! I now have two degrees under my belt and once my Prince starts 4K in two years, I will be returning for my Ph.D. in Psychology.

I have new hobbies now, too. I taught myself to crochet, I’ve become an avid cook, and oh yea, I started a BLOG (which I wanted to do for years).

I bet you’re wondering what the point of this post is…lemme tell y’all. Nevereverevereverever think you have failed in your dreams or goals. I think too many people dwell on their failures instead of acknowledging their achievements. People, that is not healthy.

Think of new dreams. Make new goals. And try, try again and again. Be flexible, be open, and above all else, *que cheesy music,* always believe in yourself!¡!¡

Now, y’all have a good day, and as always,

Reach for the stars!
